The College of Science Mathematics and Engineering Technology at South Carolina State University (SCSU)

Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering Technology

The Civil and Mechanical Engineering Technology program at South Carolina State University attempts to go beyond technical competence to develop technologists who are leaders in their areas of specialization. Civil and Mechanical Engineering Technology graduates must be able to apply the principles of science and mathematics to the solution of relevant problems in our society. Challenges facing civil and mechanical engineering technologists include housing, pollution control, transportation, transmission and utilization of mechanical and thermal power, water resources development, and energy.

Students majoring in Civil and Mechanical Engineering Technology receive a strong background in mathematics, science, engineering science, and engineering design; the program also includes a minor concentration in Energy Use and Conservation Technology. The curriculum is geared toward the application of proven engineering principles and is more hardware oriented. Most of the departmental courses have laboratory sections, and hand-on experience where use of equipment is greatly emphasized.

Program Offerings

The Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering Technology offers two programs leading to a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering Technology and a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology with a possibility of a minor specialization in Energy Use and Conservation Technology for students who desire to do so. The specialization in Energy Use is also available to students majoring in Electrical and Industrial Engineering Technology. The Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering Technology also offers a joint Bachelor of Science degree in Nuclear Engineering with the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
