HBCU-UP

SCSU proposes to implement a Research-Infused STEM curriculum (RISC) as its HBCU-UP grant. This proposal will have a direct impact on approximately 500 STEM students per year and the changes it brings to the curriculum will eventually benefit all STEM students who enroll at SCSU. In 2004 the University adopted six goals to foster institutional advancement. Four of the six goals will be directly addressed for the CSMET through the RISC proposal. The University goals supported by the RISC Project are:

Academic Excellence: Utilize program productivity data in monitoring current programs and in determining the need to modify, delete, or develop new programs in accordance with emerging trends in higher education

Enrollment: Increase Student enrollment and retention

Resource Development: Collaborate with internal and external agencies to secure funding for academic initiatives and to establish joint appointments, where applicable.

Technology: Provide ongoing opportunities for faculty development in the use of technology for instruction, course and program development, and records management.

The State and the University have demonstrated a commitment to improving STEM facilities at SCSU. SCSU also has a history of success in gaining federal agency support to enhance its STEM education capabilities. In 2000 a partial renovation of the science building funded by the National Science Foundation and the State of South Carolina was completed. Plans are complete for the construction of a new science building. The university has received $8 million dollars in funding from the state for this project and is in the process of locating the remainder of the funding. Long-range plans also include new facilities for engineering technology and computer science. A spring groundbreaking is scheduled for the James E. Clyburn University Transportation Center, a center of excellence for research and training related to the science and engineering of transportation. The University has numerous agreements and partnerships with entities throughout the nation in support of its efforts in STEM education.
