Welcome
Radiochemistry is a discipline focusing on the chemistry of radioisotopes that decay to release energy in form of nuclear radiation. Radiochemists are dedicated to studying the radioisotopes by means of chemical processes and nuclear techniques, so as to make a good use of the ‘radioactive atoms’ for the well-being of human society.
The Radiochemistry Career Tract, Bachelor Science Degree in Professional Chemistry at SCSU is an undergraduate program to train the students majoring chemistry with fundamental radiochemistry knowledge and skills. The program is supported by the US Department of Energy (DOE).
Great emphasis has been put on the quality of education since the establishment of the program. Lectures and lab courses have been developed on the campus. Experienced faculty and staff members direct students in the program. Talented students with GPA over 3.5 are recruited. A laboratory, the Applied Radiation Science Laboratory, has been built up with state-of-art nuclear instruments. In addition, we are collaborating with Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) and Clemson University. Our radiochemistry students take advanced summer courses at Clemson University, and carry out hands-on radiochemistry experiments at SRNL.
In recent years, students specialized in radiochemistry have found many opportunities in nuclear-related industries and US government facilities, including:
· defense agencies in federal government
· US Department of Energy facilities and laboratories
· nuclear energy companies
· radiopharmacutical industries
· environmental agencies
· and graduate schools
