CURRICULUM
FOR BACHELOR OF SCIENCES DEGREE IN PROFESSIONAL CHEMISTRY RADIOCHEMISTRY CAREER TRACT (CHRC)
The curriculum is designed to provide the students a broad, fundamental knowledge and training in chemistry, radiochemistry, radiation science and nuclear technologies. Undergraduates will be awarded a Bachelor of Science Degree in Professional Chemistry. Students taking the Radiochemistry Career Tract have the opportunity to prepare themselves for a professional career in DOE nuclear facilities, nuclear medicine, nuclear pharmacy, civilian nuclear industries, environmental science fields, etc. Radiochemistry is an interdisciplinary science. Curriculum requirements include chemistry, biology or environmental chemistry, physics, mathematics, radiochemistry as well as radiation instrumentation trainings.
A nucleus (center) of an atom is basically composed of neutrons and protons. It exists in a balance of forces. The attractive nuclear force pulls the protons and neutrons together, while the repulsive electromagnetic force pushes the protons away from one another. If the neutron/proton ratio is not right for a specific nuclide, this nuclide has an unstable nuclear structure and tends to disintegrate (decay) to gain a stable structure. We call such type of nuclides as radionuclides or radioisotopes. The readionuclides can decay in many ways (modes). Common decay ways are alpha decay, beta decay and gamma decay.
