Alpha, beta particles and gamma rays are three basic radiations emitted from the radionuclides that undergo spontaneous disintergration. Alpha particles are naked helium nuclei, with two positive charges on each nucleus. Beta particles are high energy electrons with negative one charge for each electron. Whereas, gamma rays are high energy photons. Photons do not carry electrical charges. Because their different properties in electrical charge, these three kinds of radiations show different behaviors in a magnetic field as illustrated in this figure.
