Y-12 Mentor Protégé Program.of the US Dempartment of Energy is helping strengthen SCSU's research capabilities in radiochemistry.

Program

Introduction: The US nuclear energy industry is facing serious challenges in the 21st century. Recognizing the need to replenish the nuclear workforce and to increase diversity in the industry, the Department of Biological & Physical Sciences in the College of Science, Mathematics & Engineering Technology (CSMET) at South Carolina State University (SCSU) has developed an undergraduate radiochemistry career tract program for the students majoring in chemistry. The program is supported by the US Department of Energy.

South Carolina State University is a Historically Black University that was founded in 1896 as an 1890 land grant institution. By collaborating with Savannah River National Laboratory and Clemson University, SCSU is committed to enhance excellence and diversity by increasing the number of minorities prepared for employment and graduate studies in the field of nuclear industry.

The program awards full financial support to talented chemistry majors. The recruited students are educated with fundamental knowledge of nuclear and radiochemistry, trained with basic techniques of nuclear instrumentation, and exposed to the internship and research opportunities in prestigious universities, DOE facilities and nuclear-related industries. At the time of graduation, the radiochemistry students are well prepared for careers in nuclear-related fields, as well as for pursuing advanced degrees in graduate schools.

Entrance Requirement: Students majoring in chemistry with a GPA of 3.5 or above, who are dedicated in academic excellence and are strongly interested in radiochemistry, are encouraged to apply.

Financial Support: The qualified students are awarded with full financial support (tuition + monthly stipend). Once being recruited, the students are required to maintain a grade point average at 3.5 or higher throughout the program. Those who fail to do so will face losing the financial support and being removed from the program.
